Counseling Topics

Below are some examples of relationship topics that I have engaged with extensively. The list is not exhaustive, and other topics are also welcome.

  • How do we want to live our relationship? – Navigating between different relationship models, needs, boundaries, wishes, desires, sexualities and eroticisms or non-sexualities
  • needs-based negotiation of role and task distribution
  • How can we move from feelings of antagonism to constructive, respectful, and caring cooperation when dealing with difficulties? How can we find a caring way of dealing with uncertainties, jealousy, anger, feelings of pressure, hurt, and disappointment? How can we strengthen goodwill, appreciation, feelings of safety, and respect for vulnerabilities as well as boundaries as a basis for constructively tackling difficulties?
  • constructive communication that also honors difficult feelings; finding words for feelings, wishes, desires, needs, boundaries, thoughts, etc. that are difficult to express; developing a common language or learning to understand and translate each other’s language
  • working with change or desire for change
  • handling differences – including differences in wishes, needs, feelings, ways of showing affection and significance (often discussed under the term love languages), boundaries, ways of thinking, behavioral patterns, ways of handling challenges, vulnerabilities, resources, biographical and social experiences including experiences of discrimination, etc.
  • dealing with closeness-distance dynamics, different attachment patterns, and different ways of dealing with tensions and conflicts
  • dealing with triggers of feelings of rejection and/or pressure, also in the context of biographical experiences
  • needs-oriented options for dealing with gender dynamics (i.e., the effects of societal gender norms, socialization, body experiences, etc.) in various constellations and relationship models or lifestyles
  • approaches to addressing the effects of social inequality in relationships
