Since 2024, I have been undergoing training in psychodynamic couples counseling/couples therapy (Psychodynamische Paarberatung / Paartherapie) at the Evangelisches Zentralinstitut für Familienberatung Berlin/ezi Berlin. I chose this training because, among other things, it combines systemic and psychodynamic approaches and focuses on dealing with biographical influences, but also deals extensively with work in the present. Despite its institutional affiliation, the training is not religiously oriented, and there are certainly more qualified counselors than me for religious questions.

Beyond my training, I ensure the quality of my counseling through regular supervision and intervision, maintaining confidentiality, of course.

In addition, I am a political scientist and educator with a focus on gender relations, gender, sexual, romantic and relationship diversity, sexuality, social inequality, discrimination, and intersectionality. Since the early 2000s, I have been working on all these topics in youth education. Since 2008, I focus on adult and professional education, professional consulting, developing educational materials, and writing on these topics including on gender-reflective, queer, and discrimination-critical pedagogy and sex education. In recent years, I have been particularly interested in learning processes around inequality and discrimination. I am especially invested in fostering ways to live together in a more respectful, caring, and solidary way, and to bring about professional, educational, and political change corresponding to these values. In this context, I consider it particularly important to acknowledge complexity and develop agency within complexity. In these contexts, through my work in various communities, and my previous work as a dance teacher, I have engaged with the following topics which I consider relevant to relationship counseling, including in the development and implementation of workshops, seminars, texts, methods, self-reflection tools, exchange spaces, etc. (I describe how I translate some of these activities into dealing with relationship issues under My Approaches):

  • gender relations and gender, sexual, romantic, and relationship diversity, diverse heterosexual and queer, as well as diverse gendered realities, ways of life, identities, corporealities, etc., including diverse ways of life and realities of men, women, non-binary, and intersex people in cis, trans, intersex, and endosex varieties. (I mention these terms so that people can find mention of their realities and concerns; it is not necessary to know them all.   • relationship diversity between single and friendship-centered lifestyles, different variants of and approaches to monogamy, and ethical non-monogamy, including open relationships and polyamory
  • diversity of sexuality and non-sexuality, asexuality and aromanticism, various sexual and erotic desires, practices and lifestyles, including BDSM and kink (and also that these are not sexual for all BDSM practitioners)
  • fostering awareness of one’s own needs, wishes, and boundaries, as well as perception of the needs, wishes, and boundaries of others; strengthening individually suitable methods for communication and negotiation (including consent strategies); promoting self-assertion regarding personal boundaries and limits
  • communication, constructive strategies for dealing with tensions and conflicts, feedback
  • biography work – reflection on biographical influences and experiences and their impact on our current perceptions, feelings, and behavioral patterns; fostering a reflective and resource-oriented approach to dealing with them
  • options to approach and handle diversity and differences
  • societal inequality – in addition to gender relations (gender norms, sexism, heteronormativity, dichotomous gender/sex system, etc. – if you want to read more about these terms: https://interventionen.dissens.de/materialien/glossar), among others: racism, antisemitism, classism/social inequality, and in recent years increasingly also ableism (i.e., issues surrounding disability/ability) including chronic illness, neurodiversity, adultism, ageism, and German West-East hierarchies
  • impact of societal inequality on interpersonal relationships in various spheres of life and approaches to dealing with it in a respectful and caring manner
  • empowering potential, dynamics, challenges, and norms in various communities and their impact on relationships, including in left-wing, activist, feminist, queer, sex-positive, polyamorous, and kinky communities
  • when dealing with conflicts or challenges between people who actually have a lot in common and/or appreciate each other: understanding the underlying fields of tension and fostering agency in complexity
  • depolarization: gaining a better understanding of polarization dynamics in which feelings of antagonism arise among people who are close to each other or potential allies, and developing depolarizing, more nuanced, and benevolent ways of interacting without ignoring real conflicts
  • improvisation, communication, and consent/respect for boundaries in various forms of physical interaction, including partner dancing and several forms of erotic interaction; also including: ways to create an atmosphere conducive to emotional or intense encounters
